Blood Vessel: The Cost of Freedom
Juggling different theme in a movie is quite a tedious task especially one with so many moving parts as BLOOD VESSEL. You can see it flow from the agitations about the oil spillage and the need to JAPA for greener pastures which soon quickly devolves to human trafficking and a fight for survival. All these are aided by factors and elements; the negligence and indifference of the government and the high-handedness of Law enforcement agencies.
However, despite all these moving parts, one thing is clear, the unyielding and unrelenting need for Freedom. This is captured in the story Oyinbrakemi told about our forefathers who chose to die in Freedom than to live in bondage (You can see Boma's tears when she sings) and Abbey's resilience despite overwhelming odds.
Oil spillage in the Niger Delta has been since the discovery of oil. It was the reason for the struggle of notable Niger-Delta activist; Late Isaac Adaka Boro and unfortunately it still persists till today despite promises and passionate appeals by successive Government. The protests and agitation as featured in the movie is almost a way of Life for the people with restless youths like Boma and Degbe at the forefront.
Infact, what is seen as a blessing is now viewed as a curse to the very people upon whose Land this resources is located. As Abbey said "Wayingi's Earth is indeed a masterpiece of Unparalleled beauty...... until the evil mineral arrived. OIL. The Waters that once gave us Life now brings us death". This is the reality of the people and the frequent protests and agitation underscores their need for Freedom from the supposed curse and it's cost; sabotage and wanton arrest of every able-bodied young man.
The need and urge for greener pastures forces Tekena and Olotu to seek a way out of the country as they believed that it's the only way to get a better Life. This mirrors the illegal migration of young people in the country today. The need to get better and robust alternatives at Life leads them often to dire and inhumane options. From the harsh clime of the deserts to the overcrowding of decrepit boats/ships which causes mass death of Innocents. This story has become a norm and constant on our media space. That is the world we live in, that is the cost of Freedom; people willing to put their lives in harm's way in search of a better Life.
Then there is Lovebirds; Abbey and Oyinbrakemi who believe that Love can conquer anything taking a risk to be free from Oyin's Father who is vehemently against their relationship going to the extent of making false allegations against Abbey to the authorities.
All of these converge on a ship and their desire is being tested beyond their physical and psychological expectations. And yes the fight for Freedom still continues and is tested on the ship as it showcases the worst and dark impulse of man's inhumanity to man. The title is apt for the story and is the main arc for the theme.
Oyin's wrap was unexpected but understandable. You know with her ties to the Supernatural which she tried to rebel and free herself from. Like I said, many moving parts.
I truly want to appreciate the cast and crew for their dedication. This film is the perfect end-product for your efforts. Going through the cast list and seeing every actors being able to speak the IJAW language with "almost" perfect Tone and diction despite being from different tribes speaks volumes about the professionalism and the development in the industry. The score and music sound was perfect and it did the job of setting the mood of the film as well as the scene. In the end, the movie made us to know that if we all desire Freedom, we must be ready to bear the cost no matter how steep it may be. I also hope that this movie educates the FACTORS and ELEMENTS to understand the cause and effects of their actions.
With this I'll be rating the movie an 8/10. Let's us know what you think and leave us a comment.
