CINEMA SPICES
Hi guysssssssss....So as you know already, in this corner of stage Voice, we look or try as much as possible to review the good, the bad and ugly from cinema standard blockbuster movies.
Today we're going to be talking about IjΓ©; The Journeyπππ
Spoiler
Alert π¨
So IjΓ©; The Journey was released on the 30th of July 2010, directed by Chineze Anyaene. π I know right.... ""So why are we talking about it now?"" Well we are because it was released on Netflix on 3rd of August 2021. About two weeks ago! So yes I had to take my lenses to the cinema to find out what's special about the movie and believe me, it's indeed "special"
So IjΓ©: The Journey, is a story of Chioma(Genevieve Nnaji), a child growing up in the Nigerian countryside, who warns her restless sister Anya(Omotola Jelade Kehinde) about the trappings of the American dream. Ten years later, Anya is accused of killing three men in a Hollywood Hills mansion--including her record-producer husband. Chioma travels from Nigeria to Los Angeles and, with the help of a young, unproven attorney, discovers that the dark secret her sister wants to keep hidden might be the only thing that can win her freedom.
This movie hmmmm, it left me with a lot of questions. One: Why does the society stigmatize victims of rape? I mean they're the victims here! Anya spent was it 210 days in prison because she killed her husband and two others. 210 days in jail because she was ashamed to say she was gang raped by her own husband and two others. The resolution at the courtroom was not a resolution to me it just raised a lot of questions like the one above and secondly Choima and Anya's father "returned" π his wife to her parents because she was RAPED BY BANDITS! This is crazy and believe as crazy as it sounds many traditions across Africa still adopt it.
Well let's talk about the acting. Genevieve Nnaji is a master of the art. There was no "Genevieve" in the delivery of her lines, she was Choima Opara all through. I love the way she imitated the "American accent" whenever she wanted to mimick Turner (Ulcher Que).
One thing I really didn't like about the movie was the predictable love twist. I just didn't like the fact that I could tell that Turner and Chioma were going to fall for each other.
Soooo, I hope it's fair enough to rate the movie 7/10. It you don't agree with me, let me know in the comment section.
